Slowing Down To Live More

For me. taking intentional time to slow down and enjoy my meals is one of the ways that I savor my day. But sometimes, we also have to eat fast without hurrying.

Oddly enough, that is often the case on Zen retreats. I remember my first Zen retreat. I assumed that we'd be eating slow and mindfully. So I did. By the time I expanded my awareness enough to notice everyone else in the room, I was stunned (and a little embarrassed) that I was the last one done eating. Everyone was waiting for me. It wasn't until I started my Feldenkrais Training that I heard the term "go fast without hurrying." From then on, I intentionally applied the eat fast without hurrying concept to my meal times on retreat. But at home, I savor the slow.

Slowing down allows us to sense more, savor more, and feel more. It also helps with...

DIGESTION
Thoroughly chewing your food can improve digestion, which helps your entire body to function better. How you feel is intimately linked to food, nutrition, and digestion.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
By slowing down, you can listen to your body and know the portion size it actually needs. When you eat quickly, you miss these signals because you've fallen out of rhythm with your body's natural digestive process.

BODY-BRAIN CONNECTION
Slowing down, savoring your food, and listening to your body for signals can all improve your ability to read your biological cues — including nutrient needs (a.k.a. food cravings).
