Frequently Asked Questions

The following are questions people often ask at Conscious Movements about how we work together and why. If I haven’t answered your question, please feel free to connect with me here.

What do I wear to a Feldenkrais Session or Class?

Loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily move in is recommended.

How much does it cost?

How many Functional Integration lessons do I need to take?

One or two lessons are recommended to determine whether this work would be beneficial to you. A course of at least six private lessons or classes is recommended to get a basic understanding of what is involved. Some people are satisfied with this amount and can use the principles on their own in a basic way. Other people study for several months or years. The length of your study would depend on your learning style, your physical capacities, and own effort. The longer you continue to explore movement the Feldenkrais way, the more you will improve.

How often should I do Feldenkrais?

Taking a lesson or class once a week is recommended. However, young children with disabilities or brain injuries may benefit from attending two to three private lessons a week.

Should I take a private Feldenkrais session or a group lessons?

There are a few factors to consider when deciding to do classes or workshops. Both styles of learning are unique and powerful. My recommendation is to simply try both and find what you like and what fits your budget. Also, keep in mind that the most effective way to initiate change with the Feldenkrais Method is to simply do it. So come to classes, book a private and let me help you find a way to explore the work at home.

Why to do each style:

Awareness Through Movement® lessons (taught in classes) verbally guide you through movement and learning. This is fantastic because it calls upon your verbal faculty for learning. For many people this alone helps to remember and recall various movements that ‘feel good’.

Functional Integration® (private lessons) tend more towards the touch-to-movement end of learning. This is also an incredible way to learn as you begin to expand your ability to sense yourself more directly. Since we are limiting the necessity for the verbal faculty to get involved, you may find that you learn at a deeper, subconscious level.

Is it safe to exercise after a lesson?

Since you will have just experienced something new in your body which needs to be integrated into your nervous system, your body (in particular the way your body consolidates learning) will be a bit vulnerable for a while. Buffy recommends that you do not perform any strenuous exercise, especially lifting weights or moving too fast to pay attention to yourself, for a few hours immediately following a lesson.

What should I bring to a lesson?

You may bring any tools, instruments or exercise equipment that you would like help with using.
